A few weeks ago I began a three month adventure where I will be road tripping the U.S. with nine fellow interns split up among two minivans- this is what all the cool kids mean when they talk about #vanlife right? Okay maybe not quite the same idea, but it's guaranteed to be an interesting experience nonetheless. I left uncharacteristically rainy Southern California with a suitcase and a backpack and boarded a flight to Atlanta, our first destination. I felt strangely at home wandering through the airport by myself. Headed to a brand new job in a myriad of new places with strangers that would soon be the people I spend every day and night with should have felt daunting, but to me it just felt normal. When I stepped off the flight I didn't know a single person's name in my cohort, where I'd be staying that night, or what our exact itinerary would be for the duration of the program. I'm either adventurous, crazy, or a little bit of both. Regardless, here I am, in a dingy hotel sharing a room with people I just met and living out of a suitcase yet again.
After a few weeks of training in Atlanta we headed to Florida but decided to stop in Savannah on the way. With only a few hours in the afternoon to explore, we found ourselves walking along the Savannah River watching the traditional river boats cruise by, and wandered up and down the historical cobblestone River Street lined with old brick buildings and Irish pubs. For a moment I felt like I was back in the U.K. To keep with the European theme we grabbed a late lunch at Moon River Brewing Company. Sitting in their beer garden we enjoyed the south's sunny February. While Atlanta had plenty to offer, I felt much more at home in the quaint, historical, and beautiful Savannah, and felt as though I went on vacation if only for a few hours.
